Upcoming Chelsea Reconstruction

Perhaps we should look at possible ways to improve the Jackson yard at the same time as we're redoing Chelsea. It would be an ideal time to relocate the backdrop toward Chelsea to give Jackson some additional space. If Chelsea cannot give up any space then we could also move the Chelsea fascia to recover the lost area.

It could also be a good time to start thinking about a lower level staging yard or return tracks. The entry could easily be incorporated into the Jackson/Chelsea redo. It would be the perfect time to work that into the reconstruction.

We've gotten a good start on the modifications for Dexter and the area in front of the windows. The next significant track change should occur during June (4 weeks between open houses). I anticipate finishing out Dexter spurs, pulling out the siding and spur that leads to the coal plant, and putting in the spur for Four Mile/Chelsea Grain. Chelsea Grain is going to take a bit of bench work modification to level it out so the cars don't run down hill. I have some model kits on order that should be here possibly by June 2nd.

The next major track change after this will be Chelsea, with the target being September (again 4 weeks between open houses).

The final phase, Grass Lake, will probably happen at the end of the year. We can keep the main line functional while we tear out and rebuild the bench work as needed, then it will be a matter of making a focussed effort to pull the main and fill it back in during a week or two.

Kevin, Any idea when we will be having a board meeting? I'll be here May 26 & June 2. After that I'll be missing a few meetings, but it would be good to have it resolved so others could work on it if they're interested

Protective clear plastic scenery shield

I’m trying to develop a project to install a protective plastic shield around the layout to save our scenery from damage. One approach that seems simplest would be to cut 6 inch wide plastic strips, maybe 4 feet long, and simply screw them to the fascia allowing a 2-inch overlap, so a 4 inch high projection above the layout. Seems like that would be enough. I’ve seen this approach used on other layouts. I’ve also seen much higher screens but I don’t think it’s necessary and would be a lot more expensive. We’ve got about 250 feet of fascia so would need an equal length of plastic strips. There are a few places where wider strips would be needed like the big trestle and the new Dexter road and creek where the fascia is cut down lower. We could do it for about $350. What do you think?
